Your Go-To Shopping & Savings Calculator

Whether you're shopping during a sale, comparing deals, or pricing products for your business, knowing the exact discount and final price matters. Our Discount Calculator gives you instant answers: enter the original price and discount percentage to see the final price and how much you save, or enter two prices to find the discount percentage. Support for stacked discounts (e.g., 20% off plus an additional 10% off) and optional tax calculation makes this the most complete discount tool you'll find.

Multi-currency with proper national formatting: Switch between USD, EUR, GBP, INR, and JPY. Each currency displays numbers in its native format — Euros use dot for thousands and comma for decimals (1.234,56 €), Indian Rupees use the Lakhs/Crores grouping system (&rupee;12,34,567.89), and Japanese Yen shows no decimal places. An international ISO 4217 format is shown alongside for easy comparison, and the final price is also displayed in words (e.g., “Five Hundred Dollars and Seventy-Four Cents”) so you can verify amounts at a glance or use them in documents.

Discount Formulas Explained

CalculationFormulaExample
Sale PriceOriginal × (1 - Discount/100)$80 × 0.75 = $60
Savings AmountOriginal - Sale Price$80 - $60 = $20
Discount %((Original - Sale) / Original) × 100($80-$60)/$80 × 100 = 25%
Stacked DiscountPrice × (1 - D1/100) × (1 - D2/100)$100 × 0.80 × 0.90 = $72
Price + TaxSale Price × (1 + Tax/100)$60 × 1.08 = $64.80

Shopping Tips

Stacked Discounts Aren't Additive

A 20% off coupon plus a 10% off sale is not 30% off. The second discount applies to the already-reduced price: $100 × 0.80 × 0.90 = $72, which is 28% off total.

Compare Unit Prices

A larger size at 15% off might be cheaper per unit than a smaller size at 25% off. Always compare the final price per unit, not just the discount percentage.

Don't Forget Sales Tax

Tax is typically calculated on the discounted price, not the original. A $100 item at 20% off with 8% tax: $80 + $6.40 tax = $86.40, not $108 - $20 = $88.

Track Prices Over Time

Use the history feature to save calculations and compare deals. What looks like a 50% off sale might only be 20% off if the "original" price was inflated.

Understand Currency Formatting

Number formats vary by country: Europeans write 1.234,56 € (dots for thousands, comma for decimals), India uses Lakhs/Crores grouping (&rupee;12,34,567), and Japan's Yen has no decimal places. Our calculator formats each currency correctly — look for the blue hint and international format for clarity.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate a discount percentage?

Discount % = ((Original Price - Sale Price) / Original Price) × 100. For example, if an item was $100 and is now $75, the discount is ((100-75)/100) × 100 = 25%. Use the "Price → Discount %" mode to calculate this instantly.

How do stacked discounts work?

Stacked discounts apply sequentially. A 20% discount followed by 10% off does NOT equal 30% off. The second discount applies to the already-reduced price: $100 × 0.80 = $80, then $80 × 0.90 = $72. The effective total discount is 28%.

Is tax calculated on the original or discounted price?

In most jurisdictions, sales tax is calculated on the discounted (final) price, not the original price. Our calculator applies tax after all discounts, which matches standard retail practice.

Why does the Euro price look different (dots and commas)?

European countries use different number formatting than the US/UK: a dot (.) separates thousands and a comma (,) separates decimals. So $1,234.56 in US format becomes 1.234,56 € in European format. Our calculator applies each currency's native formatting automatically and shows an international format alongside for easy reference.

What is the Lakhs/Crores system for Indian Rupees?

India uses a different grouping system: after the first three digits from the right, numbers are grouped in twos instead of threes. So 10,000,000 (ten million) is written as 1,00,00,000 and called "One Crore". Similarly, 100,000 is 1,00,000 and called "One Lakh". The words display also uses these terms for INR.
