How to Split a PDF into Separate Pages or Files
"How do I split PDF pages into separate files?" is one of the most common PDF questions — and the answer depends on exactly what you need. This tool gives you three ways to split a PDF into individual pages or multiple files, so you can pick the one that matches your goal:
- Split a PDF into individual pages — choose All Pages (Individual) mode. A 20-page PDF becomes 20 separate one-page PDF files, each named by its page number. This is the fastest way to turn one document into single-page files.
- Split a PDF into separate files by range — choose Custom Ranges and enter something like
1-3, 4-6, 7-10. Each comma-separated group becomes its own PDF, so you can carve a long document into logical sections (chapters, invoices, or departments) in one click. - Split a PDF into equal chunks — choose Every N Pages to break a large PDF into files of, say, 5 pages each. Ideal for splitting a scanned batch or a big report into evenly sized parts.

How to Split a PDF on Mac (Preview) — No Software Needed
macOS has a built-in way to split a PDF in Preview without installing anything. It works well for pulling out a page or two, though it gets fiddly for large documents. Here's how to split a PDF on Mac using Preview:
Open the PDF in Preview
Double-click your PDF, or right-click it and choose Open With → Preview. Preview is the default PDF viewer on every Mac.
Show the thumbnail sidebar
Go to View → Thumbnails to display every page as a thumbnail down the left side.
Select and drag pages out
Click a page thumbnail (hold Cmd to select several), then drag them onto your Desktop. macOS creates a new PDF containing just those pages. To split a PDF into two files, drag out the first set of pages, then drag out the rest.

Alternatively, choose File → Print, set the page range (e.g. 1–5), then click the PDF → Save as PDF dropdown to export only that range.

How to Split a PDF in Adobe Acrobat (and a Free Alternative)
If you have a paid Adobe Acrobat Pro subscription, you can split a PDF in Adobe Acrobat using the Organize Pages tool:
Open Organize Pages
Open your PDF in Adobe Acrobat Pro, then choose Tools → Organize Pages (the free Acrobat Reader cannot split PDFs).
Click Split
Select Split in the toolbar. Choose how to divide the file: by Number of pages, by File size, or by Top-level bookmarks.
Set output options and split
Click Output Options to pick the target folder and file naming, then click Split to generate your separate PDFs.
Adobe Acrobat Pro is a paid subscription, which is overkill if all you need is to split a document. This free alternative to Acrobat splits PDFs the same way — into individual pages, ranges, or equal chunks — without an account, a download, or a watermark. How to Split a PDF into Two Files
Splitting one PDF into two documents — for example, separating a cover letter from a resume, or dividing a contract at the signature page — takes one step here. Upload your PDF, switch Mode to Custom Ranges, and enter both halves separated by a comma. To split a 10-page PDF into two files at page 5, type:
1-5, 6-10
Each comma-separated range becomes its own file, so you instantly get two PDFs: pages 1–5 and pages 6–10. Change the split point to divide the document wherever you like — 1-1, 2-10 peels off just the first page, while 1-8, 9-10 pulls off the last two. The same trick scales to three or more files: 1-3, 4-6, 7-10 produces three separate PDFs at once.

Split Modes
