Technical Insights: GIF vs JPG Compression
GIF uses LZW (Lempel-Ziv-Welch) compression, a lossless algorithm that builds a dictionary of repeated patterns. It works well for flat-color graphics with large uniform regions but is inefficient for photographic content with continuous tonal variations. GIF's 256-color palette means every pixel must be mapped to one of 256 pre-selected colors, causing visible banding in gradients and photographs.
JPG uses DCT (discrete cosine transform) compression that divides images into 8x8 pixel blocks, converts them to frequency domain, and selectively removes high-frequency data humans perceive poorly. This lossy approach achieves excellent compression for photographs while maintaining visual quality that typically surpasses GIF's limited color palette.
One important note: GIF supports binary transparency (pixels are either fully transparent or fully opaque) while JPG does not support any transparency. During conversion, transparent GIF regions are filled with a background color (white by default). If you need transparency, consider converting to PNG format instead.
